"The best thing I've ever purchased"

It's a phrase we generally hear after 12 or so months with a fibre laser, generally customers come to us after either owning a CNC plasma cutter and are ready to level up with laser precision and speed or are outsourcing laser cutting and are ready to bring it in house to save time and increase profits!

This is going to be a bit of a read, so take a seat, but we want you to be able to make the right choice from DAY 1, so please get comfortable while we answer all the questions we had many many years ago when we started with CNC machines...

Its no secret that there are plenty of average machines out there (and plenty of amazing expensive ones too), so here at Origin Automation we have designed a range of machines built specifically for Australia to bridge that gap!

Introducing the OA-Open, our 3kw open bed offering to Australia!

The nitty gritty of what we wished we knew 10 years back when we got our first machine!

Running Costs

General running costs vary depending on how much the machine operates, this is a guide for a machines that runs a few hours every day.
For most people here's some info that is handy:
The machine cuts mild steel with oxygen, we recommend people that cut every now and then get a E sized bottle to start and trade up to a 6 pack (6 bottles all connected together in a rack) or a 12 pack if it makes sense to do so, a 6 pack of oxygen usually lasts about 2 months

Cutting stainless and aluminium, you can use nitrogen but it's a big expense and generally gets used much faster than oxygen, the cut quality is fantastic but, we have a few customers who don't use nitrogen at all except for assisting cutting thicker stainless and aluminium.

In our opinion, the best all round gas is compressed air, it requires a super high pressure air compressor (16 bar) and an air drier to remove moisture, (you cannot use a normal compressor as any moisture will damage the lens in the head) but this is by far the most cost-effective way to cut all materials without the need to buy gas or rent bottles. (We sell a compressor compatible at a competitive rate)

As far as consumables go on the laser itself, you have the main protective lens, these are around $5ea and a machine that runs a few hours a day will need it changed every 2 or so weeks.

The nozzle on the end of the laser nearest to the workpiece would get changed every 6-8 months and these are about $25ea

The nozzle screws into a ceramic, this would get changed once a year or if you broke it, these are about $40ea

As you can see the costs of running the machine are almost insignificant in comparison to what it could make in a single day, let along an entire year.

How do I get my files onto the laser computer and what does the laser software actually do?

The process to cut a part is very easy, you will be cutting solo in just a matter of a few hours, once you have it mastered, you will be able to load and cut a part quicker than you can swap a cutting disk on a grinder!

The process to cut a single part:
Simply open a DXF file of your choosing into the program, set your lead in and out (where the laser starts to cut from, and where it finishes), set your material type from the predefined material list and press go. It's that simple!

Have a bunch of parts you want to nest and cut all at once?
Its just as easy, simply open all the DXF files you want to cut, set the quantity, do the lead in and lead outs for each part, click nest and let the machine do the rest! Once it has made the most optimised layout of the parts, hit cut and you're done!

Notes:
*Supplied and installed - Does not includes import fees, taxes and container transport.
*Free technician setup - this refers to the actual hours required for the technician to setup the machine at your premises, it is the machine purchaser's responsibility to cover local respectable accommodation, food and taxi to and from hotel and airport for the duration of the setup (approx. 2 days). Origin automation will cover the costs of the flights.
Check with your local state if open bed laser cutters are permitted, some states may require a screen fitted to comply.
